Digestive Health After 45

You may not have too much stomach acid. You may have too little.

Why bloating after meals so often gets blamed on the wrong thing — and what actually supports comfortable digestion.

If this sounds familiar, you are not imagining it

  • You eat a normal meal and thirty minutes later your waistband is tight.
  • You feel heavy and full long after you should have moved on from lunch.
  • Foods you have eaten your whole life now sit differently.
  • You have tried a probiotic — maybe several. Perhaps they helped for a while, then stopped.
  • Someone told you this is just what happens after 50.

It is common. That does not make it something you have to accept — and it does not mean the problem is where most people look for it.

The part most people get backwards

Stomach acid production naturally declines with age

Most people assume digestive discomfort means too much acid. For a great many adults over 45, the opposite is closer to the truth.

Acid output tends to decrease as we age. It also decreases with chronic stress, with years of eating in a hurry, and as a normal consequence of how the digestive tract changes over decades.

Stomach acid does more than most people realize. It begins protein breakdown. It signals the pancreas and gallbladder to release enzymes and bile at the right moment. It helps unlock minerals — calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, B12 — from the food they arrive in. And it maintains the acidic environment the upper digestive tract depends on.

When acid output drops, food moves along less completely broken down. That is when heaviness and post-meal discomfort tend to appear — and why the timing so often lands twenty to forty minutes after eating rather than immediately.

This is normal physiology, not a diagnosis. If your symptoms are severe, persistent, or new, please see your physician — there are causes that need a proper evaluation, and this page is education, not a substitute for one.

Why a probiotic alone often is not enough

Digestion is a sequence. Each stage depends on the one before it.

Probiotics support stage four. That is genuinely important — and it is one step out of four.

01

Acid

Begins protein breakdown and signals the next stage to start.

02

Enzymes

Break carbohydrates, fats and proteins into pieces small enough to absorb.

03

The lining

The surface where absorption actually happens.

04

Flora

The bacterial population that finishes the work.

Support stage four while stages one and two are lagging, and results tend to be partial. That is the most common reason people tell us a probiotic “worked a little,” then plateaued.

Formulas that address a single stage are easy to make. Supporting the whole sequence takes more ingredients and costs more to produce — which is why most products on the shelf do one thing.

01 — Acid

Betaine HCl 400 mg

Supports the stomach's natural acidic environment, where protein digestion begins.

02 — Enzymes

DigeZyme® enzyme blend 100 mg

Amylase, protease, lactase, cellulase and lipase — supporting the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, milk sugars, plant fiber and fats.

03 — The lining

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice root (DGL) 250 mg

Traditionally used to support the comfort of the stomach and intestinal lining. Deglycyrrhizinated so it can be used without the blood pressure concerns of whole licorice.

Slippery elm bark 200 mg

A demulcent botanical that forms a soothing gel, supporting the comfort of the digestive tract lining.

Marshmallow root extract 100 mg

A second demulcent, working alongside slippery elm to support a comfortable gut lining.

04 — Flora

Probiotic blend 10 billion CFU

Supports a healthy, balanced population of beneficial bacteria.

Regularity

Cape aloe 15 mg

A low, gentle amount included to support comfortable regularity.

Suggested use: up to 2 capsules with your largest meal. 90 capsules per bottle.

Dr. Mitch on digestion and gut health

Short answers to the questions we get asked most.

Is bloating, cramps, and unpredictable trips to the bathroom taking over your daily life with no clear explanation?

Did you know that most of your serotonin — the "feel-good" neurotransmitter — is produced in your gut, not your brain?

Have you noticed changes in digestion with aging — more bloating, gas, or irregularity? Learn why.

Did you know that the most underrated health habit costs nothing, takes no extra time — and almost everyone skips it?

Long before anyone knew bacteria existed, cultures all over the world discovered that fermenting turns ordinary food into something that makes people feel vibrant and alive.

Same food, two very different outcomes — decided largely by the state of your microbiome. This is why gut health is so foundational.

Common questions

How do I know if low stomach acid is my issue?
There is no way to know for certain without a proper evaluation, and this page cannot tell you. The pattern people most often describe is discomfort that arrives twenty to forty minutes after a meal rather than immediately, feeling heavy after normal portions, and finding that protein-heavy meals sit longest. If that sounds like you, it is worth discussing with your physician. If you would like a wider picture of where your body may need support, our free longevity and wellness quiz takes about three minutes.
Can I take this with a probiotic I already own?
This formula already includes 10 billion CFU of probiotics, so most people find it unnecessary. There is no harm in both, but there is rarely a reason.
How long before I notice anything?
Most people who notice a difference notice it within the first one to two weeks. Give any digestive support at least 30 days of consistent use before drawing conclusions.
When should I take it?
Up to 2 capsules with your largest meal. Taking it with food matters — these ingredients are meant to work alongside a meal, not on an empty stomach.
Can I take this if I am on medication?
Check with your prescribing physician first. That is true of any supplement, and especially so if you take medication that affects stomach acid.
Is this safe to take long term?
These are nutrients and botanicals, not pharmaceuticals. That said, digestive discomfort that persists deserves a proper workup rather than indefinite supplementation. Supplements support digestion; they do not replace finding out why something changed.
What if it does not work for me?
