Cardiovascular & Endothelial Health: Supporting Circulation, Nitric Oxide, and Heart Resilience

Your cardiovascular system — and especially the endothelium, the delicate lining of your blood vessels — keeps arteries flexible, blood flowing, and oxygen reaching every tissue. A key part of that is nitric oxide, the molecule that signals vessels to relax and open. As endothelial function declines and vessels stiffen with age, circulation grows less efficient. These are recognized hallmarks of aging.

In our 60+ combined years of practice, we’ve seen how much of cardiovascular health is modifiable with consistent, targeted support — long before standard risk markers ever budge.

What is endothelial health?

The endothelium is the single-cell lining of your roughly 72,000 miles of blood vessels. It regulates blood flow, blood pressure, clotting, and inflammation, and it produces nitric oxide to keep vessels relaxed and open. Healthy endothelium means flexible arteries and efficient circulation.

Why it matters more as you age

Declining endothelial function and nitric oxide lead to reduced circulation, higher blood pressure, lower endurance, and greater long-term vulnerability. In men, impaired endothelial function and reduced nitric oxide often show up early as erectile dysfunction — an important signal of broader vascular health, not just a standalone issue.

What challenges your blood vessels

  • Environmental toxins (heavy metals, PFAS, air pollutants) and oxidative stress inflame vessel walls.
  • Chronic stress raises cortisol and adrenaline, constricting vessels and elevating blood pressure.
  • Inactivity reduces the healthy “shear stress” that prompts nitric oxide production.
  • A nutrient-poor diet deprives vessels of the building blocks for repair and flexibility.

Daily habits that promote blood flow

  • Eat nitrate-rich foods (beets, arugula, watermelon, leafy greens) to support nitric oxide.
  • Practice slow nasal breathing (e.g., the 4-7-8 technique) to support vessel dilation.
  • Move aerobically — brisk walking improves circulation and endothelial function.
  • Manage stress daily to ease vessel strain.
  • Include heart-supportive foods like pomegranate, and stay well hydrated.

In Ikaria, Greece, a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil and wild greens, paired with hillside walking and relaxed social living, supports nitric oxide and endothelial flexibility into old age.

Nutrient and supplement support

From the Cardiovascular & Circulation section of our Supplement Catalogue:

  • Ultimate Nitric Oxide ($45) — arugula extract, potassium nitrate, hesperidin, B vitamins — supports healthy nitric oxide and circulation
  • Blood Pressure Support ($57) — hawthorn, grape seed, CoQ10, olive leaf — supports healthy blood pressure already within the normal range and a healthy arterial lining
  • Circulation & Muscle Fuel Rx ($64) — L-citrulline, D-ribose, beet root, PQQ, hawthorn — supports healthy blood flow and heart-muscle energy
  • Heart Health ($45) — CoQ10, vitamin K2 (MK-7), L-carnitine, taurine — supports healthy heart function and helps direct calcium to bones rather than arteries

Conventional “normal” vs. root-cause “optimal”: the markers standard panels miss

A standard cholesterol panel is a blunt instrument — it can miss heart risk for years. A root-cause approach reads deeper markers against optimal:

  • hs-CRP (vascular inflammation): optimal under 1 mg/L, not just the conventional “under 3.”
  • ApoB (the actual number of artery-damaging particles): far more predictive than total or LDL cholesterol; higher ApoB means more plaque-forming particles.
  • Triglyceride/HDL ratio: a simple insulin-resistance and heart-risk clue — optimal is 2:1 or lower.
  • eGFR (kidney filtration, tightly linked to vascular health): optimal is above 90; most doctors don’t flag it until it drops below 60, by which point damage has often occurred.
  • Autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance: impaired ANS is a powerful independent predictor of cardiovascular problems — often appearing years before cholesterol or blood pressure become abnormal.

These are general educational reference ranges, not a diagnosis — to help you understand your own results and talk with your provider, never to interpret any individual’s labs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the endothelium and why does it matter?

The endothelium is the thin lining of your blood vessels that regulates blood flow, blood pressure, and nitric oxide production. Healthy endothelial function means flexible arteries and efficient circulation; declining function is an early step toward cardiovascular issues.

Why is ApoB better than standard cholesterol?

ApoB counts the actual number of artery-penetrating particles, which predicts plaque buildup more accurately than total or LDL cholesterol alone. Two people with the same LDL can have very different ApoB — and very different risk.

How can I boost nitric oxide naturally?

Nitrate-rich foods (beets, arugula, leafy greens), regular aerobic movement, and slow nasal breathing all support your body’s nitric oxide production, which helps vessels relax and circulation improve.
